This is a copy of an email Gil wrote to some friends this afternoon. I'll paste it here . . .
All,
I am doing well, thanks for your prayers.
I am getting ready to go see a counselor. Physically I believe I am doing well, I only had a scratch on my shoulder and a bullet on my head that did not go in but was stopped at the base of my skull. They removed the bullet and sent me home the next afternoon.
Emotionally I am managing but it is not easy. I am too overwhelmed to have too many people over or anything like that, but we have family with us helping us and providing support.
Thank you all for your support, thoughts and prayers. I count it as a miracle to be alive. God has given me a second chance at life.

Truly, it is a miracle, dear, and may God continue to guide and protect you all.
I hope you received the well wishing I had sent you through Margaret Brennan. My heart goes out to all of you.

We are so very grateful to a loving God who spared your life. We care very much for all of you. We wish we could do something, anything. But we will keep praying.
Much love,
Mel and Ernie
This blog is a good idea. Thanks for starting it. So many people want to know how you are (including a journalist in Uruguay).
I'm grateful that you are well, with your family, and safely at home. Welcome back to Harrisonburg.
Gil,
I cried when I read you were in the middle of this thing and cried for joy when I read that you are okay. I'm sure I'll see the three of you in the summer.
I was curious if the Nathan from your story is Nathan Carr.
I want you to know that I am praying for both of you, for Gil's complete physical, emotional and spiritual recovery, and that God will redeem this in a way that brings blessing, his glory, to many, many people. Our God can redeem any situation!

Gil, I was grateful to hear that you are alright. Your story about the blood of the Indonesian student touched me greately. I was a good friend of this student and I am sure that he is with God this day and rejoices in the part he played in saving your life. May God bless you and your family.

I am so glad to hear you are doing well. My family is praying for you all and we wish you the best.

Dear Gil & Nell-Marie,
We are so thankful for God's protection of you in that horrible situation. Please know that our prayers go out to you and we will continue to pray for your total healing.
In Christ's love,

Gracias a dios podés contarlo.
I am glad to hear you are healing physically and that you have the supports to help you through the rest. Andrew and I keep you all in our thoughts these days.
Much love,
Welcome back !
Try to make a better life for you and beloved people.
This is a hard proof, and you have great opportunities.
Praise God for a miracle in your life. In the small town of Hempstead TX there are many who are praying for you. Know that God has a purpose for sparing your life. We may not know what it is at the moment but HE will reveal it to you in HIS time. May he give you a speedy recovery physically, emoitonally and spiritually. HE is in Control!! We love ya as a brother. Your Christian Brother and Sister, Pat & Larry
